Quyen T. Nguyen, MD, PhD, is a board certified head and neck surgeon. Dr. Nguyen has clinical expertise in the fields of otology and neurotology/ skull-base surgery. Her main focus is in cochlear implants and facial nerve surgery.
She is also expert in the evaluation and medical and surgical treatment of problems related to the ear, including exostosis (“surfer’s ear"), tympanic membrane perforations, ossicular chain problems, otosclerosis, cholesteatoma, single-sided deafness, Ménière’s disease, and acoustic neuromas.
As an associate professor at UC San Diego Department of Surgery, Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, she trains surgeons during their fellowship.
Dr. Nguyen’s basic science research focuses on the development of fluorescently labeled biological probes to help surgeons during surgery. In collaboration with Dr. Roger Tsien (Nobel Prize, Chemistry 2008), she is working on the development of Fluorescent Guided Surgery (FGS) with Live Molecular Navigation (LMN), also known as “color-coded surgery". Their collaborative work has been highlighted in by several high profile media sources including Nature Research Highlights, Nature Science BusinessXchange, Nature Cancer Reviews, The Economist,
and Technology Review
Dr. Nguyen is fellowship trained in neurotology/skull-base surgery and board certified in otolaryngology - head and neck surgery.
