Charles H. Choe, MD - Endocrinology
 
Charlie Choe, MD, is a board certified endocrinologist. He also holds an active Endocrine Certification in Neck Ultrasound from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists for performing ultrasound and ultrasound-guided biopsies for patients with thyroid nodules and cancer.

Dr. Choe sees patients for a variety of endocrine conditions, including thyroid disorders, diabetes, parathyroid and calcium disorders, osteoporosis and bone disease, pituitary disorders and adrenal gland disorders. He has a particular interest in patients with complex thyroid cancer, working closely with surgery, radiology, pathology, and oncology teams in a multidisciplinary manner.

"There's never been a day where I regret my decision to practice endocrinology. There is so much that is changing in this field, and I love that I am in this academic environment where I can provide up-to-date and evidence-based care. I hope this passion comes through when I interact with my patients, staff, and students."

As an associate professor of medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Choe is actively involved in training medical students, residents, and fellows in the field of endocrinology.

Dr. Choe completed his fellowship and medical residency training at UC San Diego School of Medicine and earned his medical degree from Columbia University in New York.

Dr. Steven Edelman is a native of Southern California and has been living with type 1 diabetes since the age of 15. After completing his diabetes specialty training at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, he came to the University of California at San Diego, where he has been on staff since 1990. Dr. Edelman is an international leader in diabetes treatment, research, and especially education. Dr. Edelman champions the cause of patient advocacy and has dedicated his life to helping people with diabetes live healthier and happier lives. He is foundar and director of Taking Control Of Your Diabetes (501c3).

Dr. Edelman has written 4 books and more than 200 publications, including articles and abstracts that have been published in such journals as American Journal of Physiology, Diabetes, and Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. He is a journal reviewer for several journals, including Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of Clinical Investigation, and Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. His honors include valedictorian of his medical school graduating class, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, and Chief Resident's Teacher of the Year Award from the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Edelman hosts a television talk show series called Taking Care of Your Diabetes (www.tcoyd.org).The show includes guests from various medical and professional backgrounds providing information ranging from common emotional barriers, nutrition, exercise, insulin therapies, oral medications, technological advances, neuropathy, foot care, study results and legal issues.

Heather L. Hofflich, DO, is a board-certified endocrinologist and internist. She provides endocrinology and primary care for adults, including preventive care and diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases. She completed her internship at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Hofflich earned her medical degree at College of Osteopathic Medicine and her undergraduate degree at Cornell University. Deborah Kado, MD, MS is Associate Professor in the Departments of Family & Preventive Medicine and Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. She is a specialist in the fields of geriatric and internal medicine with an emphasis on the evaluation and treatment of osteoporosis.

Dr. Kado is a native of Northern California. She graduated Cum Laude from Bryn Mawr College and obtained her MD from Cornell University Medical College. She then completed internal medicine residency training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and 4 years of fellowship training, first in clinical research at UCSF, followed by obtaining a masters of science degree in epidemiology from the UCLA School of Public Health and clinical specialty training in geriatrics at UCLA.

She served on the UCLA faculty in geriatrics and orthopaedic surgery from July 2000 through July 2012 until joining UC San Diego in August 2012. Her primary research interests are in understanding the pathogenesis and adverse health outcomes associated with age-related changes in spinal posture. She is a successfully funded National Institute's of Health researcher and is internationally recognized in her field of expertise.

Dr. Kado sees patients in the Department of Medicine/Division of Endocrinology outpatient clinic in La Jolla and at Hillcrest Hospital.

Kristen Kulasa, MD, is a board-certified endocrinologist who specializes in diabetes. Dr. Kulasa serves as director of inpatient glycemic control - working to ensure that people who are in the hospital have optimal blood sugar levels during their stay. She oversees the clinical diabetes nurse educators on staff.

Dr. Kulasa is a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American College of Endocrinology.
