Abrams, Reid Allen
 
Named a 2013 “Top Doc" in San Diego Magazine’s “Physicians of Exceptional Excellence" annual survey performed in collaboration with the San Diego County Medical Society.

Dr. Abrams is Chief of Hand and Microvascular Surgery, Vice Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Medical Director of the Hillcrest Outpatient Surgery Center. He is a Professor of Clinical Orthopedics and Surgery, and past Director of the UC San Diego Hand Surgery Fellowship.

Dr. Abrams' expertise is widely recognized in sports, traumatic and acquired (e.g. inflammatory, oncological) hand, wrist, forearm and elbow problems. These include bone, joint, blood vessel, tendon and nerve conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, hand/wrist/elbow arthritis, and complex wrist and elbow trauma.

“I love the reconstructive challenges of being a hand surgeon. I see the physician and the patient as a team. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is seeing the gratitude in my patients’ eyes when their pain is better and they’re able to function in ways they couldn’t before their treatment."

Dr. Abrams has been selected as a Best Doctor in America, has been recognized as a San Diego Top Doctor by San Diego Magazine for 8 years, and was selected as one of San Diego's Super Docs by the San Diego Union-Tribune. He has been recognized as a Patient Choice Doctor and received the distinction by U.S. News & World Report as being in the top 1 percent of Hand and Orthopedic Surgeons in the United States.

He has authored numerous publications and book chapters on topics including upper extremity anatomy, nerve injuries, tendon injuries, tendon transfers, hand infections, carpal tunnel syndrome and elbow injuries.

Dr. Abrams received the Vernon Nickel Teaching Award in 1997 and 1998. In 1999 he was recognized for his teaching by the previous 10 years of graduating hand surgery fellows. In 2007 and 2013, he was given the Wayne Akeson Resident Teaching Award.

Dr. Abrams enjoys spending time with his family and cheering for his son on the baseball field. Growing up in Colorado, he began skiing at an early age and still enjoys hitting the slopes. He also enjoys cycling, backpacking and music.

Achar, Suraj Arthur
 
Suraj Achar, MD, is a board-certified family medicine doctor. He provides primary care for patients of all ages, including preventive care and treatment of acute and chronic diseases. Dr. Achar has repeatedly been named a “Top Doc" in San Diego Magazine’s “Physicians of Exceptional Excellence" annual survey performed in collaboration with the San Diego County Medical Society.

Dr. Achar has a special interest and fellowship training in sports medicine. He helps direct the UC San Diego primary care sports medicine fellowship and has a joint appointment at Rady Children’s hospital where he also works with children in “360 sports medicine". He has clinical expertise in ultrasound guided diagnostics and procedures. Dr. Achar is the lead team physician for the San Diego Sockers (San Diego's professional indoor soccer franchise), and team physician for UC San Diego Intercollegiate Athletics, Canyon Crest Academy and Kearny High School. He is also one of the medical directors for the California State Games, an amateur youth competition involving 5,000 athletes in 20 sports.

Dr. Achar was inspired to become a physician after learning about the work of Doctors Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian organization. After completing medical school, he spent six months in Kenya as part of the program, providing medical care to children amid war and poverty. Dr. Achar feels the most rewarding aspect of being a physician is "having the opportunity to really make a difference when it counts."

His research work includes clinical trials related to sports medicine. He is especially interested in anabolic steroid use in children, adolescents and professional athletes. As an associate clinical professor of medicine, Dr. Achar is involved in training medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Dr. Achar also teaches physicians from around the country at the American Academy of Family Physicians Scientific Assemblies and UC San Diego’s PACE program where he focuses on the law in medicine.

Dr. Achar completed his residency and fellowship training at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree at State University of New York Buffalo School of Medicine and is board-certified in both family medicine and sports medicine.

Dr. Achar played high school tennis and soccer and was a member of the intercollegiate soccer team at the University of Poitiers, France. He continues to play and coach soccer, and stays fit through running and strength training. When not at work, Dr. Achar spends as much time as possible with his wife, Suriti, and his three sons, Ravi, Jivan and Rohan.

William Ackerman, MD, is a board-certified internal medicine doctor. He provides primary care for adults, including preventive care, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic diseases. He is also board-certified in geriatrics and pulmonary medicine. Adler, Eric David
 
Dr. Adler's clinical interests are in the care of patients with advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support and cardiac transplantation. He has a strong interest in the appropriate use of palliation in heart failure, and has written numerous review articles on the topic. He is also an investigator for numerous clinical trials for all stages of heart failure. Additionally, he has performed research specifically on the use of stem cells for the treatment of heart failure. His research, which is ongoing, resulted in publications in top journals and is supported by numerous funding agencies including the National Institute of Health and the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Adler went to medical school at Boston University. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Washington and Cardiology Fellowship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Raised in Miami, Florida, Dr. Advani graduated from the University of Chicago in 1992 with a BS in Biological Chemistry and then received his MD from the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine in 1999. Following graduation from medical school, he did a post-doctoral fellowship working on combining gene therapy with radiotherapy. He then completed his medical training by doing a surgical internship at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland followed by a return to Chicago for his residency in Radiation Oncology at the University of Chicago where he was named Chief Resident.

Dr. Advani was recruited to UC San Diego to serve as Director of Radiobiology and Biotechnologies. His research interests are focused on combining gene therapy with radiation therapy as well as the development of novel radiosensitizers to improve the efficacy of radiotherapy. He is co-investigator of NIH/NCI funded research, and his laboratory research has served as the basis for a recently opened Phase I clinical trial at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.

Dr. Advani sees patients with prostate cancer and other malignancies at the UC San Diego South Bay Radiation Oncology Treatment Center in Chula Vista.

Dr. Afshar joined the Division of Hospital Medicine faculty in September 2010.

He received his MD degree from the University of Texas, Galveston, in 2007. In 2010, he completed his internal medicine residency at the Scripps Clinic/Green Hospital in La Jolla, California. Dr. Afshar also holds an MBA degree from Texas A&M University.

Natalie Afshari, MD is accomplished as a clinician, surgeon, and a research scientist. Dr. Afshari’s achievement in cornea and refractive surgery and overall patient care has been recognized by her peers in several of the “best doctors" lists, including “The Best Doctors in America" in each listing for the past decade. Furthermore, Dr. Afshari was awarded the academic Achievement Award and the Secretariat Award by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has consulted Dr. Afshari’s expertise for matters of safety and efficacy of various ophthalmologic treatments. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has honored Dr. Afshari by awarding her and her collaborators extensive grant support to study Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy, a genetic disorder leading to corneal transplantation.

In her clinical practice, Dr. Afshari specializes in cataract surgery, corneal transplantation, descemets stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK), intacs for keratoconus, laser refractive surgery, including LASIK, LASEK/Advanced Surface Ablation, PRK, PTK, and treating surgical and medical diseases of cornea. She is a highly skilled cataract surgeon and holds national positions on the professional committees of cataract specialists, including serving as the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery’s representative on the Council of the American Academy Ophthalmology. Dr. Afshari is also a recognized expert in corneal transplantation and refractive surgery and has successfully treated many complex cases referred to her by other leading surgeons.

In addition to her successes with patients, Dr. Afshari has published extensively in both medical journals and textbooks. She is the co-editor of a two volume Cornea Book “Principles and Practice of Cornea". While her textbook chapters focus on clinical skills, her journal articles report her innovations and findings in research. Her research has won her multiple honors, including the prestigious Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) award and the Heed Foundation Ophthalmic Award. Additionally, Dr. Afshari performs sight-restoring procedure using keratoprosthesis, a synthetic plastic-based artificial cornea which has been featured nationally on television news programs.

Dr. Afshari’s dedication to research and clinical care also inspires her teaching. For her commitment to teaching and training ophthalmologists, she has received the Teacher of the Year award at Duke University Eye Center. She also has been invited to lecture nationally and internationally and is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (Board-Certified Ophthalmologist). Dr. Afshari’s peers also elected her to the cornea program committee and Awards committee of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), which oversees the scientific program of the largest eye research association in the world. She is also the Chief Judge for the scientific posters of American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Several scientific and scholarly journals have sought Dr. Afshari’s expertise and recognized her research leadership by naming her to their editorial boards or seeking her assistance in reviewing the work of other scientists. She is the editor the Current Opinion in Ophthalmology cataract Section and has served on the editorial board of EyeNet magazine, a journal published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She is also a reviewer for a number of scientific journals including: Ophthalmology; American Journal of Ophthalmology; Archives of Ophthalmology; Cornea, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science; Molecular Vision, Experimental Eye Research; Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery; and Human Mutation.
